Swan Boats in Boston Public Garden Open Saturday April 16

Celebrate Spring and join Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh in welcoming the Boston Swan Boats back to the Public Garden lagoon at 10 am on Saturday, April 16. The Mayor will host the first ride of the popular Boston family attraction. “We are proud to celebrate the 140th year that the Swan Boats have brought joy to the Public Garden and millions of residents and visitors since they were first launched,” said Mayor Walsh. “I’m pleased to join the Paget family and local schoolchildren for this historic ride around the Public Garden lagoon as we open the Swan Boats for another season.” The first rider is thanks to the Paget family, owners and operators of the Swan Boats, first launched by Irish immigrant and shipbuilder Robert Paget. Mr. Paget designed the Swan Boats after attending the opera Lohengrin in New York City. At the end of the opera, the hero crosses a river in a boat drawn by a swan. Students from Roxbury’s Ellis Mendell Elementary School and Higginson/Lewis K-8 School will join the Mayor on the first ride. Students have been working on pictures of the Swan Boats for art class. Some of their work will be on display at Boston City Hall. 2016 is the 140th season for the Swan Boats. The oldest and smallest boat in the fleet just celebrated its 105th season, while the newest...

Our family was recently a guest of our friends at the Big Apple Circus that arrived in Boston last weekend and will be hanging around City Hall Plaza through May 8th. This year’s circus’ theme is called The Grand Tour and is a wonderful trip across the world and back portrayed in circus acts that range from funny to breathtaking. Back again for the fourth season is Ringmaster, John Kennedy Kane. Have children (or adults) in your family that are scared of traditional clowns? THIS is the circus for you. The clowns this year are portrayed by Joel Jeske (who also wrote the show) and Brent McBeth. Here’s a photo of them. The Big Apple Circus has a little bit of everything — animals (trained dogs, horses, and ponies), jugglers, aerialists and other circus artists. One of the most breathtaking moments was performed by the Dominguez Brothers in a contraption called the Wheel of Wonder. It involved lots of edge of your seats awesomeness. If you are looking for great family friendly fun in Boston, Big Apple Circus is...
