My kids love watching shows – their little eyes light up at the sight of Disney On Ice, Yo Gabba Gabba Live, and even Max and Ruby live. But up until today, they’d never seen anything that was not specifically made for children. So, I wasn’t sure how they’d react to seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular at the Citi (Wang) Performing Arts Center. They are five and seven, and I was worried their attention span would be too short for the show.
Turns out, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. My kids, and especially my son, stared in wonder and fascination for the full first act, and were a irritated when the show ended for intermission. During intermission, they had a blast talking about all of their favorite parts – they loved the Nutcracker performance best in the first half.
They enjoyed the second half as much as the first. My daughter continued to be fascinated with the dancing skills of the Rockettes, as well as the quick costume changes. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t, as my husband feared “just a bunch of women kicking their legs”. The show featured small skit-type segments, including a Santa segment, a beautiful live Nativity segment, and a Nutcracker segment.
As soon as the final curtain was raised, my 5-year old son said, “Again! Again!”. I got him out of there by promising that we’d return next year (“and every other year” – my daughter added). We most definitely will.
