For one weekend Dedham is changing its colors from maroon and white to pink. On Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, join Team Mind Over Matter in a truly unique fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. The fundraiser combines family fun, community outreach and breast cancer education.

“When I walked in 2010 in my first Komen walk, it was for my friend who is battling a late stage breast cancer, this year, while the team still honors her battle, I find myself twice as motivated to raise funds,” said Mara Gorden team captain and Dedham resident. “This is primarily because just days after the walk in 2010, I too was diagnosed with breast cancer. While I am fortunate that it was caught early I am that much more driven to raising dollars to end this disease which afflicts so many women each year.”

Dedham Goes Pink festivities begin with a kickoff event at the Endicott Estate on Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m. with a dessert reception, silent auction and a presentation by motivational speaker Dusty Showers. Most recognizable as “the Man in the Pink Bra,” Dusty Showers has participated in seven Komen 3-Day walks and raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research since 2005. Dusty Showers formed The 2nd Basemen in 2009. This group works worldwide to raise breast cancer awareness, education and support research. Friday’s event is sponsored by the Norfolk and Dedham Group and Dedham 375.

“I am excited that Dusty will be speaking at our kickoff event,” Gorden said. “Dusty and I have gotten to be friends over the past year. During my treatment I spent hours in doctor’s waiting rooms. It was Dusty who helped me see the light at the end of tunnel of treatment and who so often brought a smile to my face. It was for this reason that I asked him to walk on my team this year in Boston.”

A $20 suggested donation can be made at the door for this event. To RSVP please contact Mara Gorden at 781-956-2443. There is limited space so an RSVP is appreciated.

On Saturday, May 7, follow the pink balloons – 1,000 of them to be exact, donated by Prime Honda and Toyota of West Roxbury – to pink events throughout Dedham Square and Oakdale Square. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. come see the old fashioned fire truck, decorated for the occasion; meet the firemen and checkout Devaney Oil’s pink oil truck. A variety of kid’s music and live entertainment will fill Dedham Square. Music Together will have informal jam sessions for parents and kids in the town’s municipal lot (just look for the pink oil truck). Stores in Dedham Square and Oakdale will be offering raffles all weekend to support Team Mind Over Matter. Raffle tickets can be purchased at Maribu, Sheepskate and Blue Bunny.

Raffle tickets will go on sale during the May 5 Ladies Night in the Dedham Square. Tickets are $5 for 1 or $20 for 5.

Later on in the day Saturday, head on over to Boch Ice Center, 1105 East St. in Dedham for Family Skate from 1-4pm. There will also be raffle giveaways and family fun at the arena.

The pink weekend ends Sunday, May 8, with a JamBaby children’s concert at 10 a.m. at the Dedham Temple, 410 Washington St. Tickets are $10 a person on $25 a family. There will be a bake sale and raffle giveaways at the event. Tickets can be purchased online at jambabyconcert-efbevent.eventbrite.com or purchased at the door.
